The Value of Sustainability and Resilience in Healthcare
Pre-pandemic, many healthcare systems were struggling to contain costs and meet demand amid challenges related to aging and growing populations, rises in noncommunicable diseases, and workforce shortages. The pandemic further worsened these issues and starkly exposed system weaknesses. For health systems to be sustainable, they must be able to continually deliver their key functions over the long term in the face of these accumulated stresses.
The pandemic also illustrated that health systems are vulnerable to public health emergencies and other shocks such as weather or climate disasters, geopolitical conflict and other crises. Resilience encompasses health systems’ ability to better prepare for, adapt to, learn, transform and recover from shocks, minimizing their impacts on population health, social and economic well-being.
The Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR) is committed to collaborating across sectors and borders to build more resilient and sustainable health systems for the future.
The PHSSR and its partners seek to work with local academics, governments, policymakers and other stakeholders to
- Build knowledge and understanding of the dimensions of, and relationship between, health system sustainability and resilience, so that these concepts can be understood in different country contexts, enabling identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats;
- Guide action by generating independent, evidence-informed solutions and policy recommendations to improve sustainability and resilience, promoting their uptake and supporting pilot implementations; and
- Facilitate cross-border and cross-sectoral collaboration to accelerate improvement and strengthening of healthcare systems by enabling international knowledge exchange and collaboration with health system stakeholders.
The PHSSR is an initiative within the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the London School of Economics and Politics, AstraZeneca, Royal Philips, KPMG, the WHO Foundation, and CAPRI.
CAPRI as the Asia-Pacific Hub of the PHSSR
CAPRI is the Asia-Pacific Hub of the PHSSR, organizing research and convening in the region. Since early 2022, CAPRI has collaborated with the PHSSR in the Healthcare Resilience Summit at Expo 2020 in Dubai and the PHSSR’s WEF affiliate session “Collaborating to Build Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems” in Davos.
From phase 3 and beyond, CAPRI is coordinating research teams to analyze the sustainability and resilience of health systems in the region and provide a regional perspective to the PHSSR’s findings. CAPRI is also expanding the PHSSR’s network in the Asia Pacific, bringing voices and expertise from the region to the PHSSR’s global platform.
2022 PHSSR Global Summit: Future-proofing Healthcare Systems through Data and Digitalization
In the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR) 2022 Global Summit, Syaru Shirley Lin of CAPRI facilitated a panel on “Future-proofing healthcare systems through data and digitalization.” The discussion included leading experts from academia, government, and the private sector exploring different avenues enhance the resilience of healthcare systems worldwide by using data and technology.
“Collaborating to Build Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems” at World Economic Forum
CAPRI joined the World Economic Forum affiliate session “Collaborating to Build Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems” on May 25, 2022 in Davos. From the need for economic prioritization of health infrastructure to the effects of political crises like in Ukraine and China on global supply chains, Professor Shirley Lin, Chair of CAPRI, joined with Professor José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; Frans van Houten, Chief Executive Officer of Philips; Leif Johansson, Chair of AstraZeneca; and Dr. Emanuele Capobianco, Chief Strategy and Impact Officer of WHO Foundation, to cover the complex factors that make up global healthcare preparedness.
Healthcare Resilience Summit at World Expo 2020
The Asia-Pacific Hub of Reform for Resilience Commission housed at CAPRI took part in the Healthcare System Resilience Summit at World Expo 2020 in Dubai. Reform for Resilience co-chairs José Manuel Barroso and Malcolm Turnbull, commissioners Chen Chien-jen and Stan Shih, and APAC Hub advisory board chair Chang-Chuan Chan delivered remarks during the Keynote Session and PHSSR Launch session on January 31, 2022.
